Mullet is forced to bring back DI Frost from compassionate leave when the 'Black Farm Murders' case he handled - involving the theft of paintings - requires his urgent attention. As he re-examines his investigation after a wrongful conviction claim in the press, Frost finds himself working alongside Hazel Wallace, now a Detective Sergeant, as she investigates the suspicious death of a hospital porter at his flat. Frost is perplexed when a fingerprint found at the scene is the same as 'The Appendix Man' - an unidentified person found dead in the river in one of his previous cases (Dead Male One). When the porter is found to be in possession of stolen paintings, Frost discovers that all three cases are linked and finds a web of lies concealing the truth about the two dead men.
