Two women spot an advertisement in the newspaper of an offer of a holiday villa for "those who appreciate wisteria and sunshine." Desperate to get away from their drab lives and dull husbands, they arrange to go with two other strangers; Mrs Fisher, a stern widow used to her own way and living in the past of her dead friends, and socialite Lady Caroline Dester, who has become tired of people hanging onto her for her beauty and her wealth and eager to get away from things. But little do they know the effect that the villa will have upon them when they get there, or what comes about when their husbands decide to arrive later on...
Starring Miranda Richardson, Josie Lawrence, Polly Walker, Joan Plowright, Alfred Molina, Jim Broadbent, Michael Kitchen, Davide Manuli, Vittorio Duse, Adriana Facchetti, Anna Longhi, Matthew Radford, Stephen Beckett and Neville Phillips. This was part of the Screen Two anthology series, first broadcast on TV on April 5th 1992, but made and released in cinemas on November 6th 1991. It earned an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for Joan Plowright, who lost out to Marisa Tomei for My Cousin Vinny at the 1992 Oscars (held in 1993). I did have this on videotape years ago when it came out, but sadly that tape was lost in the move, so I have member Zach Smith to thank for finding this for me. I think this suits viewing in summer, so I hope you enjoy it.
