With his first documentary film "Ansikten I Skugga" (Faces in Shadow) (1956), shot in collaboration with Christer Strömholm, Peter Weiss turns away from creating surrealistic images in the artificial space of the studio, but to find them in reality. The reality that presents itself to the eye of the artist who looks at the margins of modern society. "Ansikten I Skugga" thus shows tramps and homeless men who hang around in the pubs and streets of Stockholm's old city centre. Without any voice over, the film consists of small registrations that render an almost lyrical image of those who fall through the grids of the social welfare state.
