A U.S. Marine major tries to keep his captain on the right track through combat on Guadalcanal, training new recruits in San Diego, and a relationship with a WAAAF while on leave in Australia.   Stars Pat O'Brien, Robert Ryan, Ruth Hussey Movie Trivia According to a review of this film in the 21 June 1944 edition of Variety, the War Department provided footage of the naval attack on Guadalcanal and the training of Marine recruits at Camp Elliott, California. Robert Ryan (Capt. Craig) enlisted in the Marines after this film was made and spent most of the war as a Drill Instructor at Camp Pendleton, California before being discharged in November of 1945. He would not appear in another film until Trail Street (1947). The movie showed some Marines carrying the Reising submachine gun. The Reising was only issued to Marines and then were recalled because the magazine was prone to falling out and the weapon itself was not very sturdy. Unlike depicted in this film, Marine paratroopers never made a combat jump in WWII. The Marines disbanded their paratroop units in February of 1944.
