Soviet Memorial WWII Berlin - Treptower Park

The Soviet Memorial in Treptower Park is truly magnificent. The monument commemorates the approximately 80-thousand Soviet soldiers that died during the battle of Berlin. Some say that the number of dead Soviet soldiers between April and May 1945 was a lot larger with estimates reaching a staggering 300-thousand dead. The monument was established on May 8th 1949, on the 4th anniversary since the Nazi regime surrendered. The Memorial was finished only a few months before Berlin and Germany were divided into East and West. The visual focus point of the memorial is a 12-metre statue of a Soviet soldier breaking a swastika with a sword while holding a German child on his other arm. Before one reaches the statue, there are 16 sarcofagi with war scenes on both sides. Soviet Leader Joseph Stalin is quoted on the one side in German and on the other in Russian. At the other end there are red granite pyramidal gates inscribed with Soviet flags. In front of them kneel two Soviet soldiers. Beyond is a solitary female statue. Motherland - Mother Russia - weeping at the loss of her sons. An annual vigil has taken place at the memorial every year since 1995. Called the "Day of Freedom", this corresponds with Victory Day, a Russian holiday, and the final surrender of German soldiers at the end of World War II.
