Part of the reason ABC topped the Neilsen Ratings, beating out NBC and CBS was due to their ability to cast the right mix of actors. This safeguarded production so that their movies were never compromised by "bad acting." Further, a memorable mix of well-known actors created a buzz at the watercooler, provided them with good PR, consistently drove ratings, and helped build The Movie of the Week into a reputable brand. Isn't It Shocking is more than a black comedy because it contains elements of horror. Cast includes Alan Alda (M*A*S*H), Louise Lasser (Mary Hartman), Ruth Gordon (Harold & Maude, Rosemary's Baby), Will Geer (The Waltons), and inveterate Lloyd Nolan.

Mount Angel, Oregon, is a sleepy, small-town filled with quirky
townsfolk. The town’s placid lifestyle is upended when a series of mysterious

The town’s good-natured but inexperienced sheriff, Dan Barnes, comes to
believe a killer is on the loose. Even more disconcerting, the killer seems
to know a lot about the victims and the daily rhythms of the town, meaning
the killer might be one of the local citizens.
