The follow up to 1992's 'Talk 16' documentary checks in with Astra Crosby, Erin West, Helen Kim, Lina Pikasek and Rhonda Joseph three years after the five then 16 year old teens filmed Talk 16 (Talk 16 was filmed in 1990, but not released until 1992). The young women, now 19 years old, appear initially to have all changed quite a bit from three years earlier. But as the doc probes deeper, cracks begin to appear in some of their facades. Astra, who was the wild child of the first doc comes across at first as a mature, responsible young adult with a good job. But deep down, has she really changed at all? Helen Kim, who was living a stress filled life trying to live up to the expectations of with her extremely religious parents, is in pre-med at university and living away from home for the first time. Lina seems to have progressed the most of the five - at first. Rhonda is stuck in a rut of self-doubt and Erin... oh dear. Oh my. Spoiled Rich Daddy's girl Erin initially says all the right things, but as the camera follows her around college and she loosens up while being interviewed, she gradually reveals her true self. And it ain't pretty.
A more than worthy follow-up doc to the critically acclaimed 1992 Canadian doc 'Talk 16', Talk 19 delves deeper, in a much shorter running time. Some of it is breathtakingly candid (see Erin West's shallow revelations on what her secret weapons arefor getting whatever she wants from anyone, and how she plans to use this power for the rest of her life.
