𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙧𝙨: 𝙅𝙤𝙝𝙣 𝙋𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙥 𝙇𝙖𝙬, 𝘿𝙤𝙣 𝙎𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙙, 𝘽𝙖𝙧𝙧𝙮 𝙋𝙧𝙞𝙢𝙪𝙨 & 𝘾𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙣 𝙍𝙚𝙙𝙜𝙧𝙖𝙫𝙚💥 The story of Manfred Von Richthofen, the German air ace during World War I and his struggle with the enemy aces and some jealous German officers. Manfred von Richthofen (John Phillip Law) arrives from the Cavalry, at a squadron in the German air force under the command of Oswald Boelcke. He quickly becomes an ace. Meanwhile, a Canadian pilot named Roy Brown arrives at a British squadron, where the top-scoring pilot is Victoria Cross winner, Major Lanoe Hawker. Brown ruffles the feathers of his squadron mates by refusing to drink a toast to von Richthofen. Von Richthofen and fellow squadron pilot, Hermann Goering clash when squadron commander Boelcke is killed after a mid air collision (Boelcke's upper left wing struck the undercarriage of Böhme's Albatros), and von Richthofen is given command of the squadron. Outraged when he is ordered to have his aircraft camouflaged, von Richthofen has the squadron's aircraft painted in bright conspicuous colors, claiming that gentlemen should not hide from their enemies. Later, von Richthofen is wounded during an aerial battle; meanwhile Lanoe Hawker is killed. Brown and his squadron decide to attack von Richthofen's airfield, destroying their aircraft on the ground. However, von Richthofen, with the help of a batch of new fighters from Anthony Fokker, the 'Richthofen Flying Circus' launches a counter-attack on the British airfield. Brown later kills von Richthofen during an aerial combat, and Hermann Goering takes over command of the 'Flying Circus'.
Movie Trivia
Production was shut down briefly due to a disaster on another semi-related film in the area. Birch Williams, an American living expat in Ireland, was the owner of the period planes Roger Corman leased for the production. He was so interested in and excited by what Corman was doing that he decided to make a similar film himself, using his own planes. Unfortunately, there was a midair mishap, and Williams and two pilots were killed. In response, the Irish government shut down all film flying, and the insurance company canceled Corman's policy. It took several days of negotiation to get their status restored, and to resume production.
While the dogfights were shot in Ireland over a two week period using actual vintage planes, the crash sequences were filmed at Andrews Air Force base in a single day, using models assembled by a group of teenage hobbyists Roger Corman happened across while scouting locations.
Reused the vintage airplanes from The Blue Max (1966).
Stunt pilot Charles Boddington was killed during filming when the vintage biplane he was flying crashed at Weston aerodrome near Dublin. The following day, another aircraft crashed, injuring pilot Lynn Garrison and actor Don Stroud.
Director Roger Corman's future wife, Julie Halloran, filled in as a gunner in one of the planes during the raid sequence when the production came up one actor short.
