During the turbulent Years of Lead, Italy was shaken by political violence from extremist groups on both the left and right. Among them, the Red Brigades emerged as the left's most infamous.
Founded in 1970 by Renato Curcio, Margherita Cagol, and Alberto Franceschini, the Red Brigades carried out kidnappings, assassinations, and bombings, targeting business leaders, law enforcement, and politicians. Their most notorious act was the 1978 kidnapping and murder of former Prime Minister Aldo Moro, a turning point in Italy’s battle against terrorism.
