Ep 2: 1978-79. Now having left school, Johnny and Alan try to make their way in the world during the Winter of Discontent and rising unemployment. Alan struggles to find a job or any enthusiasm for doing so, preoccupied about finding his father. And once he defies his mother and does so, he is intrigued to just what his father actually does. Needless to say, it's not legitimate! Meanwhile the ever optimistic Johnny sets out to get a job in welding, but soon both he and Alan find their heads turned by the arrival on the scene of the punkish Stella. But later Johnny has other things to focus his mind on when tragedy hits his family...
Starring Mark Farmer, Ian Sears, Alrick Riley, Jamie Foreman, John Bardon, Catherine Harding, Diana Davies, Johanna Hargreaves, Maurice Colborne, Nick Stringer, Nadia Cathouse, Tommy Eytle, Ancel McFarlane, Sonya Saul, Jim Findley, Francis Victory, Arthur Whybrow and Kevin Lloyd - best known for playing Tosh Lines in The Bill and here appropriately playing a policeman. Indeed, for soap fans there is much to spot. As well as John Bardon, Jamie Foreman and Tommy Eytle from EastEnders, there is also Diana Davies, playing a character far removed from the gentile Mrs Bates in Emmerdale Farm.
