Nestled among his many acres of Gladiolas, Carl Fischer, a passionate floriculturist from St. Charles, MN, is considered one of the leading experts in hybridizing Gladiolas. He is widely known as the Gladiola Man. This Emmy award-winning story is one of my favorite stories that I shot, edited and co-produced with the legendary reporter, Ken Speake, from KARE 11. It aired as a KARE 11 Extra. I am most proud of the fact that we did not get in the way of the story -- instead we allowed Carl to tell his own story and share his deep spiritual conviction with his own words. He taught us a lot about life, to enjoy heaven now, to make it our "life's work." Carl has since passed away but his spirit remains in all of us. In August, the town of St. Charles hosts a Gladiolus Days festival not only to honor his many Glads that he produced but his remarkable spirit for life. I can honestly say that in all of my years as a video producer and storyteller, Carl ranks as one of the most unique and loving characters I have ever had the privilege to meet.
