Part 2 of 6 of the mystery thriller. After D.I Stuart Brown is killed by a sniper by someone targeting the critically injured motorcyclist who witnessed the killing of teenager Kelvin Stagg, DCI William Bell takes on the case and is more than suspicious at what Della Smith and her journalist colleagues on the newspaper she works at knows. But they are reluctant to reveal anything to the police, with Cal McCaffrey sensing a huge story having acquired the stolen briefcase and what it contained. But it seems that Cal's friend and MP Stephen Collins may of been lying to him when they learn that a rival journalist has a document that reveals that Collins was preparing to leave his wife for his now dead lover, political aide Sonia Baker. But it seems that someone had already sent Collins' wife Anne a letter - but who?
Starring John Simm, David Morrissey, Polly Walker, Bill Nighy, Kelly MacDonald, Amelia Bullimore, Benedict Wong, James McAvory, Marc Warren, Philip Glenister, Madeleine Potter, Michael Feast, James Laurensen, Rebekah Staton, Michael Flanaghan, Maureen Hibbett, Johann Myers, Carla DuBois, Rebecca Ryan, Charlie Ryan, Stuart Goodwin, Sean Gilder and Elizabeth Elvin among the cast. This was a hugely acclaimed thriller when it was first broadcast in 2003 and you can understand why. Written by Paul Abbott (who later went on to write the Channel 4 series Shameless, it features a number of future Shameless stars in it, including Sean Gilder, Michael Flanaghan and Rebecca Ryan. It also features the first pairing of John Simm with Philip Glenister, who would both later appear in the TV series Life on Mars. In my opinion this is a much better thriller and somewhat curious in hearing how Glenister speaks here compared to his character in Life on Mars.
