Efim Schachmeister (Born 1894 in Kiew, Russian Empire - Died 1944 in Buenos Aires, Argentine). Efim Schachmeister was from a Romanian-Jewish family in Kiew. During 1920's and early 1930's Efim Schachmeister was one of the most popular band leaders in Berlin. 1925-1933 he and his orchestra played mostly at the famous Berlin hotel "Hotel Excelsior" in Kreuzberg, located beside the famous railway station "Anhalter Bahnhof". Hotel Excelsior was connected with Anhalter Bahnhof via an under ground tunnel, which made it easy for the arriving tourists at the Anhalter Bahnhof to enter Hotel Excelsior. Before 1945 Anhalter Bahnhof was one of the biggest railway stations in Central Europe, and it was the gate for all railway connections from Berlin to the southern destinations in Europe. Anhalter Bahnhof was located only 500-600 meters south of Potsdammer Platz in the downtown of Berlin. Both Anhalter Bahnhof and Hotel Excelsior were destroyed during WW2. 1933 Efin Schachmeister emmigrated to Buenos Aires in Argentine and continued his career until his death in 1944.
