Hermann von Stachow Dance Orchestra, with Vocal refrain in German (Leo Monosson) – Gipsy, You Have Stolen My Heart [Zigeuner, du hast mein Herz gestohlen] Tango (Egen-Grothe-Schwabach) Decca - Polydor Series, UK 1932 (originally recorded by Polydor, Berlin 1932)
NOTE: This lovely and internationally recognized German tango was recorded in 1932 in Berlin by a little known German dance band, led by the violinist Hermann von Stachow. The vocal refrain is made by the renowned German crooner, Leo Monosson. In the years 1932-33, Stachow’s orchestra waxed only a handful of sides for the Polydor/ Deutsche Grammophon (Polydor was a DG branch for the international editions). Through the Polydor sales, the matrix was re-pressed at the British Decca’s Polydor Series – a high quality UK re-editions of the most valuable European Polydor recordings. In 1933, so the Stachow’s Orchestra as the singer Leo Monosson both disappear from the German recording history – due to victory of the Nazi Party in the national election in Germany. Leo Monosson was a Jew and via Paris, he emigrated to the US, where unsuccessfully he tried to continue his artistical career. Alas, nothing is known about the subsequent events in Stachow’s life.
The photoshowa was inspired by the covers of the German songbooks for "Gesang und Piano" (Singing by the piano) - which vere more popular in Germany of the 1920 and 30s, than the regular sheet notes for a single tune. They usually were edited quarterly or twice a year, and distriubuted throughout Europe tthe collections contained not only the German but also the international hits). many of those art-deco covers are today the perfect examples of the art of illustriation in Europe in the jazz age.
