Pop star Dawn Blake was found dead on a beach. Mark Taplin had encouraged her to sign for William Gilmore's label Wreck Records but now believes she was cheated out of money and dropped by the label to stop her finding out.
Anna Lee (Imogen Stubbs) is a private detective for the 90's. Young, determined, unconventional, uncompromising and impulsive, she left the police as an overt protest against its bureaucracy and sexism, and joined a small firm of private detectives in Kensington, West London.
There, she often finds herself investigating crimes which the police have given up on or have failed to deal with thoroughly enough.
She often throws herself into situations she can barely handle, seldom remains neutral and usually gets personally involved with her cases.
She remains romantically unattached, spending most waking hours at work and develops close friendships with her colleagues, although relations with her boss and his secretary tend to be strained.
