Zapata's Bande (1914)

dir. Urban Gad A German film crew and Danish actress Asta Nielsen travel to Italy to shoot a film about a gang of thieves, where plays the role of the leader of the bandits, Captain Zapata. However, the team is quickly mugged by real thieves who steal all their regular clothes and are forced to return to town in their costumes. As a result, the locals believe them to be criminals, with Asta as their leader. Meanwhile, a hopelessly romantic young Italian countess is so taken with the bold-looking group that she immediately falls in love with the "captain". Asta doesn't reveal her true identity right away, mainly because there is a big language barrier between the two.
