"The Hunters", released in 1958, showed the so-called forgotten air war from the Korean War. Robert Mitchum portrays an aging air pilot from WWII who manages to find one more war to find some success in. He lands command of an air squadron led by Richard Egan.
Who was his leader during WWII. Mitchum puts together a wing squadron and starts out on hunting missions. His squadron consists of a nice guy, a loud-mouth guy, and a lush whose wife Mitchum falls for. However, the squadron does come together, and manages to down quite a few enemy planes, including a Korean ace nicknamed K C Jones. The film focuses on electrifying flight sequences that hold the attention of the viewing audience, and the cast delivers performances that do carry the story.

A bit of movie trivia.
01: One scene in the film quite realistically realizes author James Salter's description of Saville's (Connell in the novel) first sight of the fighter pilots in their club at the base in Korea. Salter wrote that "It looked like a lumberjack camp. No two pilots dressed alike." In the film, Saville eventually wears a WWII sheepskin-lined leather cap and a sage green flight jacket over a blue flight suit, while Pell wears a flap-eared winter hat and a blue flight jacket over a green flight suit. Other pilots wear similar mixes of uniform clothing from both the WWII and Korean War eras.
02: The Aircraft playing the role of the North Korean or Mainland Chinese MIG 15's were actually US F-84F Thunderstreaks.
03: Actually the term Sabre Dance referred to a low speed controllability problem with all early production F-100's it was corrected by redesigning the tail surfaces. The character Dutch Imil was likely based on Colonel Francis Gabresky USAF who commanded the 51st fighter wing at K14 airbase Korea. Colonel Moncavage was based on Colonel Walker M. Mahurin USAF. Colonel Mahurin went on to command the 51st then the 4th fighter/interceptor groups. Like the character Moncavage Colonel Mahurin was shot down and captured.
