During the summer of 1992 Oliveira, though behind-hand with the script of his modern version of Madame Bovary of which the filming was to begin a month later, agreed to"waste" a week with me, on the "truth game" of this portrait. As I was born in the same town as he was and as I have been in his confidence for almost 40 years, I wanted to make him talk of our common obsessions and our common roots : Porto, a cinema town, the beginning of silent films, women who are sirens, women who are angels... forerunners.
