TV Series «Wagon Train»: «The Doctor Willoughby Story» (season 2 episode 6, aired 5 November 1958).
Major Adams (Ward Bond) is requested by the governor to pick up Dr. Carol Ames Willoughby (Jane Wyman) and take her to Silver Creek. When Adams learns she is a doctor and by herself, he initially refuses but finally agrees to the request. She is late when she picks up one of the wagon train passengers Bart Grover (Alan Marshal) at the hotel. He is drunk but she notices he is also very sick. He is an old friend of Adams who has been a drunk since the war. The doctor tends to him in her wagon trying to sober him up.
Her attentions eventually brings a spark to him and a desire to live - sober. The train finds one man dead and another mortally wounded by Indians. The wounded man tells them they had a fight with Chief Black Elk. When the Indians arrive, Adams talks to them and learns Black Elk was shot in the shoulder and needs a doctor. Seth believes the wagon train's only chance is for him to try to save Black Elk. Upon hearing this the doctor decides to go with Adams. Black Elk needs surgery to remove the bullet but the tribe...
