I know some of you might consider it a paradox to show all these images of winter to this symphony as it was written in the summer (it was finnished on the 25th of July, 1788), but I could hardly imagine that this symphony was the result of "summery" thoughts whirling around in Mozart's head. No, giving thought to the dark nature of this symphony it is far more likely that it was an expression of the grief Mozart felt at the time, as he recently had lost an all too young daughter. This is one of Mozart's greatest works and if you are in the mood for analysing the work of a genius, I strongly recommend this symphony; the movements of the key and chords, and the complexity of the harmonies are overwhelming and the theoretical structure of the music is on such high a level that it almost seems like a pro-mathematician wrote it, yet it possess enough beauty and emotion to bring a man to tears - and that is the very definition of a masterpiece!
