Changemaker: Development of compliant, reliable clean electrical energy solutions (Australia)
Peter Killeen is an accomplished and highly respected Chartered Electrical Engineer dedicated to delivering renewable energy and energy storage projects globally. Beginning in 2008 at Siemens through The IET Power Academy, he developed expertise in transmission systems, offshore wind grid connections, HVDC systems in Germany, and MV STATCOM technology in the UK.
After relocating to Australia in 2017, Peter applied his power conversion expertise to Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) during its early-stage growth. Now a Technical Director, he is one of Australia’s most experienced grid-scale BESS specialists, with 9+ years leading the development, design, construction, and commissioning of projects across Australia and New Zealand for developers, network providers, and mining organisations.
Known for technical excellence, problem-solving, and deep project lifecycle and risk management knowledge, Peter plays a key role in advancing sustainable clean energy solutions—reducing reliance on fossil fuels, lowering costs, and combating climate change.
Beyond his professional work, Peter is driven by a personal commitment to a cleaner future for his two children. He actively mentors junior engineers at GHD, leads STEM programs encouraging female Year 10 students into engineering careers, and contributes to industry advancement through CIGRE by sharing insights and lessons learned.
In alignment with the UN’s 2026 International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development, his ongoing mentorship, volunteerism, and leadership help ensure a strong, future-ready clean energy workforce.
For his outstanding leadership in advancing affordable and clean energy and contributing to climate action, Peter Killeen is proudly recognised as a 2026 Icon of Change.
