In this embryology lecture, Professor Zach Murphy discusses the development of the heart, one of the earliest and most critical organ systems to form in the embryo. The heart transforms from a simple tube into a four-chambered organ capable of supporting fetal circulation, emphasizing the precise timing and coordination required for normal cardiac morphogenesis.
We begin with the formation of the cardiogenic region from splanchnic mesoderm, and the fusion of endocardial tubes to create the primitive heart tube. Zach walks through the sequential dilations of the heart tube—truncus arteriosus, bulbus cordis, primitive ventricle, primitive atrium, and sinus venosus—and their adult derivatives.
The lecture then explores the process of cardiac looping, which establishes the heart’s left-right orientation, followed by the septation events that divide the atria and ventricles. You’ll learn how the endocardial cushions, atrial septum (septum primum and secundum), and interventricular septum form and fuse to ensure proper chamber separation and valve development.
We also cover the formation of the aorticopulmonary septum, derived from neural crest cells, and its role in separating systemic and pulmonary outflow tracts.
