"L'Ange et la femme" is a surreal, black-and-white film, based on the premise that angels exist on earth in the guise of humans and that they can resurrect the dead and affect the time stream.
A beautiful woman (Carole Laure) is murdered but is resurrected by the angel Gabriel (Lewis Furey) who falls in love with her beauty.
She has no memory of her past life.
By keeping her alone and isolated with him in a home in the wilderness, away from humanity, he is able to teach her angelic concepts and keep her alive. However, her longing to return to humanity threatens to lead her away of the protection and safety of her angelic life.
The film had a total budget of $35,000. It was filmed entirely in and around a Quebec farmhouse owned by lead actress Carole Laure. The cast and crew stayed at the house while the film was being shot. Nobody who worked on the film was paid up front. Instead, they each owned a piece of any potential profits.
At the beginning of filming Carole Laure was in a relationship with director Gilles Carle. By the end of filming, Laure had left Carle, moved in with co-lead actor Lewis Furey, who she later married. They remain married to this day - 48 years later.
