A psychological drama movie about “the clash of cultures” in the Middle East by the Russian director Yuri Grymov, shot in 2008.
“Strangers” is a story about a U.S. charity group of doctors who come to an area of internal conflict in the Arab world to vaccinate children. The doctors fail to establish a good relationship with the locals yet continue to believe they are “bringing a third-world country to their own, progressive, level.” In the end, they are revealed as testing new vaccines on the local population.
A Russian military mine-sweeping team present in the area adds an unexpected dimension to the conflict as a pacifying and self-sacrificing power.
The movie has acquired new symbolism as Russia launched its counter-terrorism campaign in Syria in 2015.
