Since the verb “to be” is one of the most important verbs in the speech, let’s dedicate a separate lesson to its use in the Past tense.
To start with, let’s learn the conjugation of the verb быть in the Past tense:

я, ты, она́ была́ (feminine)

они́ бы́ли (plural)
Now, let’s look at some common examples of using the verb to be in the Past tense.
Когда́ э́то бы́ло?
When was it?
Э́то бы́ло вчера́.
It was yesterday.
Э́то бы́ло здо́рово!
It was great!
Где ты был?

Yesterday we were in the theater.
Почему́ ты не́ был в шко́ле?

Они́ не́ были в ку́рсе.

Pay attention: in the negative sentences, the accent falls on the particle не and the following verb has no accent.
