HENRICO COUNTY, VIRGINIA — A 14 year-old middle school student is finally forced to deal with the consequences of playing with her food.
On September 22nd, the girl came out of her classroom at Moody middle school, and saw her previous year's teacher down the hall. With a baby carrot in her pocket, which she says she stashed away after lunch, she decided to hurl the snack-size veggie at the educator. Apparently, she thought it would be funny, and says she never actually thought her throw might actually connect on target. She was wrong.
The carrot, less than two inches in length, made for an effective projectile, striking the teacher in the forehead. In Virginia, assaulting a school employee on the job is a Class 1 misdemeanor, and a raw baby carrot can be considered a weapon.
Having been suspended for more than a month and counting, the girl's mother, Karrie May, says the school's disciplinary review board has requested that her daughter admit guilt for committing the act. May says they've respectfully declined.
"I don't understand this," she says. "Yes, it happened, and I can see a couple of days in school detention or even a couple days out-of-school suspension. But this goes way beyond that. We have to go to court, and her charges aren't small: assault and battery with a weapon."
The girl now awaits a court summons to find out if an assault and battery charge could indeed follow.
