OSS 117, France's equivalent of James Bond in the 50s and 60s in both pulp fiction and film, is reinvented here as a comic character who, like Maxwell Smart, somehow manages to succeed in his mission despite his cluelessness. While this French box office sensation acts primarily as a witty send-up of the dated trappings of mid-century spy thrillers and the suave secret agent figure, it also deftly weaves in jabs at neo-colonialism and ethnocentrism that still cut today.
