The white-faced whistling duck, Dendrocygna viduata, is a duck that has a clear, loud three-note whistling call. The species is gregarious, and in the wild they form flocks of 1,000 or more ducks at their favorite feeding and drinking sites. The white-faced whistling duck is found on two continents: both in sub-Saharan Africa and much of South America!
The white-faced whistling duck likes to be around still freshwater lakes and reservoirs with plentiful vegetation. It feeds on seeds and other plant parts. It makes stick nests near the ground (occasionally in trees) and lays 8-12 eggs per clutch. This species of duck sometimes migrates up to 100 kilometers.
I really like the plumage of white-faced whistling ducks. These birds gave me the impression of being very calm and docile creatures, not prone to startling at all. They seem to have all the resources they need to live a happy life at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. White-faced whistling ducks also seem to have no problem getting along with the one or two equally-friendly American coots that chose their company...
