Part 6 of 6 of the 1982 thriller. Having learned that Mr Glazer is actually a Soviet diplomat called Anton Grigoriev, Smiley has Toby Esterhase pull him in for questioning, where he reveals he was paid by Karla to visit a woman in a mental hospital every week called Alexandra Ostrakova and send back reports on her condition and appearance. Realizing that Alexandra is Karla's daughter and that he plans to try and pass her off as a Soviet spy just to get her out the country, Smiley decides to play a gamble to ensnare Karla once and for all using Alexandra as bait and arranges a meeting. But will it pay off?
Starring Alec Guinness, Michael Lonsdale, Michael Byrne, Bernard Hepton, Rosalie Crutchley, Bill Paterson, Tusse Silberg, Lucinda Curtis, Eugene Lipinski, Julia McCarthy, Joe Praml, Marion Garai, Margrit Knecht and Patrick Stewart. The final episode of this follow on to Tinker Tailor Soldier spy won much praise among the critics, but sadly on it's original showing in 1982 it had lost half it's viewing figures by the time it got to the last episode. And it's true to say it has meandered at times, lacking the mystery and tension of it's predecessor. However, it makes up for it with a tense showdown meeting between Smiley and his adversary Karla as they wait to see if their plan will work, and sees the appearance of Jean-Luc Picard himself, Patrick Stewart, reprising his role. But one question still prevails: if Alexandra is Karla's daughter, is she also Madame Ostrakova's daughter, or were they only using her to believe she was her daughter in order to get her out of the Soviet Union? I'm still no wiser.
