And now a little story about the song itself:
The opera "Prince Igor" is a legendary masterpiece by Borodin, on which the composer (and part-time organic chemist) worked for 18 years! But, alas, Alexander Porfirievich did not have enough to complete what he started: the maestro died at the age of 53. Nevertheless, the great brainchild was brought to mind – however, now through the efforts of Rimsky-Korsakov and Alexander Glazunov.
Alexander Porfirievich Borodin
Today, everyone knows this opera – and every third Slav loves it, because Prince Igor's devotion to his homeland is very acutely touched upon and vividly demonstrated in it! But even if you are far from the opera, you have definitely heard one composition that completes the second act: and this is "Fly away on the wings of the wind."
How the story began
Alexander Borodin
Today it sounds amazing, but dear Alexander Porfirievich was not a composer by education! He was a chemist, but as a true Petersburger he felt an acute craving for beauty. And so, returning from abroad to his homeland, Borodin took the first step towards the future opera - joined the creative community of the Mighty Bunch.
It is worth noting that Borodin lectured at the Medical and Surgical Academy, and work took up almost all of his free time. For this reason, the opera "Prince Igor" was written for so long. And it began with the fact that Alexander Porfirievich composed "Symphony number one", which was insanely liked by the critic Vladimir Stasov. It was he who advised Borodin to take as a basis the historical masterpiece "The Word about Igor's Regiment". The patriotic theme, in turn, fascinated Borodin. The man approached this job extremely responsibly – he even personally visited Putivl! That's how the story began.
The creation process
Putivl
The composition is included in the "Polovtsian Dances" scene. It was written (the scene as a whole) in the summer of 1875: then Alexander was on vacation in Moscow. As soon as he returned to his small homeland, the first thing he did was show the scene to his comrades in the "Mighty Bunch". They were completely delighted... I would like to add that Borodin had a clear poetic talent, because the words for the song were born precisely from his pen.
That's how, for 18 long years, Borodin created future classics as best he could – sometimes during the weekend, then at the time of vacation. And, alas, he never managed to complete his painstaking work: the composer died in 1887 at the age of 53. Such an unfairly early death came from a heart attack.
Fortunately, the great work was not in vain, but was duly completed – all thanks to the efforts of Rimsky-Korsakov and Alexander Glazunov! The premiere took place on October 23, 1890 at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, and was crowned with unquestioning success!
What is the meaning of
Alexander Borodin
We think that the meaning of this delightful composition is clear to everyone. The beautiful lyrics express love and longing for the motherland, for the landscapes dear to the heart...
"Fly away on the wings of the wind
You are in your native land, our native song,
Where we sang you freely,
Where it was so free for you and me..."
In the opera, this work opens "Polovtsian Dances" after Prince Igor refuses the conditions of Khan Konchak and he, in order to dilute the gloomy atmosphere, orders his subordinates to sing and dance.
Relevance nowadays
Masterplan
Despite the fact that this work was written more than 130 years ago (!), it is insanely popular today! This is evidenced at least by the fact that every second teenager will calmly sing to you "fly away on the wings of the wind ...". This is already a classic.
This composition is often referred to by the media, television and modern musicians. A striking example is the rock band "Aria" (from the album "Battlefield").
Even foreign artists resort to instrumental processing of this masterpiece, for example, the band Masterplan with the song "Lonely Winds of War".
