S2, Ep 5: Fortune seems to be changing, and not just against the South as finally the North start to make progress in the war. Orry and Charles decide to make a rescue mission to save George after discovering he is being held at the brutal Libby Prison. But George is in for a shock when he gets home as Stanley and Isabel's business fiddle finally comes home to roost. Meanwhile Madeline's charity work gains considerable notice, but it also puts her in danger when it gains the attention of Elkanah Bent. He sees this apparent wealthy widow as a source to fund his revolution to oust Jefferson Davis and put himself as leader. But it risks exposing both of them, as Orry learns of Bent's plot and seeks to stop him for good in an explosive climax...
Starring Patrick Swayze, James Read, Philip Casnoff, Terri Garber, Wendy Kilbourne, Inga Swenson, Terri Garber, Jim Hultzer, Mary Crosby, Jonathan Frakes, Parker Stevenson, Jean Simmons, Genie Francis, Kirstie Alley, David Ogden Stires, Lewis Smith, Kate McNeill, Hal Holbrook, Morgan Fairchild, James Stewart, Lloyd Bridges, Lee Horsley and Linda Evans among a huge cast. This proves to be an explosive episode, where some of the more treacherous characters begin to be found out. Particularly memorable is the climax between Orry and Bent, with an added positive being the last episode featuring the spiteful Ashton Main/Huntoon. There is also the continuing will they/won't they? storyline between the wet Madeline and the roguish Rafe Beaudeen. Lee Horsley is suitably handsome and quite a likeable character, but at no time could I envisage Madeline betraying Orry. But in this episode he comes out a hero that deserves better than he gets.
