Part 1 of 13 of the period drama from 1978. Invalided out of the army after being injured in the Boer War, Paul Craddock answers an invitation to become Squire of the long neglected Devonshire estate of Shallowford. Little does he realize what needs doing to it, and the locals are as curious as they are suspicious about this new interloper intending to run their affairs and way of life. But Paul is determined to have a change of lifestyle after the horrors of war, with his decision proving as rewarding as it will be challenging.
Starring Nigel Havers, Glyn Houston, Prunella Ransome, Fiona Gaunt, Madge Ryan, Joby Blanchard, David Delve, Sarah Porter, Richard Beale, Mary Chester, Valerie Phillips, Forbes Collins, Pam St Clements, Martin Fisk, Philip Martin Brown, Wendy Holloway, Valerie Holloway, Karin Foley, Bernadette Windsor, Kevin Cope, June Marlow, Maryann Turner, Robert Vahey, Nat Pearn and Charles Turner. Adapted from the novels by R.F. Delderfield, this was originally broadcast on September 24th 1978 and was a notable role for the young Nigel Havers. I found this in a charity shop a few months back, and had never seen or heard of this before. Covering the first two decades of English life in the 20th century, it starts quite well at first, with it's picturesque countryside settings, plus nice support from Glyn Houston (Donald's brother) as John Rudd. And there is also an early pre-EastEnders appearance by Pam St Clements as clairvoyant Meg Potter. Because of the amount of episodes, it's likely I shall be uploading over the course of the day on and off, so enjoy what pops up along the way.
