Wichita is an origin story, that of one Wyatt Earp (McCrea), the story is set before he gets to Dodge City, where apparently some famous gunfight occurred. From a narrative stand point it's a town tamer story, Earp arrives in a newly thriving Wichita, at this point he's a hunter of buffalo only. But as the cowboys converge on the town, and things turn very dark, Earp - a bastion of good and just righteousness finds it impossible to continue in turning down the town superior's offers of becoming the town Marshal. That's the question the town council of Wichita must decide. Too much will drive away the fun-starved cowboys coming to town after a long trail drive. Too little and the town gets shot up. Newly installed Sheriff Earp (McCrea) is on the side of strict law and order, forbidding the cowboys from bringing their guns to town. This upsets powerful businessmen and saloon owners. So Earp must contend not only with rowdy cowboys but with town politics as well.
Movie Trivia
Sam Peckinpah played a bit part as a bank teller.
Wyatt Earp was 26 when he came to Wichita. His romantic interest is portrayed by Vera Miles, who was also 26. Earp is played by Joel McCrea, who was 49 at the time of filming.
Founded in 1868 and located in south-central Kansas on the Arkansas River, Wichita began as a trading post on the Chisholm Trail in the 1860s and was incorporated as a city in 1870. In 1874 Wichits had a population around 2,500-3,000 people.
Wyatt Earp is shown carrying a long-barreled Colt. There is absolutely no evidence from factual records that he ever received the so-called "Buntline Special." Ned Buntline wrote that he gave five guns to Dodge City peace officers in 1876. It can be clearly seen on Mrs. McCoy's headstone that she died in 1874.
