On one summer's day during the Second World War a group of children are at play in the Forest of Dean. But amid the incidents of hunting squirrels, playing families and bullying among others, a siren sounds to signal that a Prisoner of War detainee has escaped - an incident that terrifies the children and inadvertently leads to tragedy...
Starring Michael Elphick, Colin Welland, Helen Mirren, Robin Ellis, Janine Duvitski, Colin Jeavons and John Bird, with narration by the writer Dennis Potter, this was a Play For Today drama that was originally broadcast on January 30th 1979. This is from a recording I did from when it was broadcast recently last week and is notable for it's unusual gimmick of casting adults in child roles. Well known, but one I hadn't seen until now, I was apprehensive about seeing it but surprisingly it works, due to the playing of the seven stars (who found it hard to adjust to the roles when first cast). There is also, despite the beautiful setting, the palpable sense that something bad is going to happen - and I don't just mean the fate of the squirrel! Once seen, never forgotten, please note that this does contain some violence.
