When Wellington is given some unwelcome reinforcements by the King of Spain, Sharpe finds himself having to train the troops, comprising of poorly trained Irish soldiers who are none too happy about fighting for the British. Wellington distrusts them and plans to send them to garrison a fort near the French lines in the hope that they will either desert or be killed. But Sharpe has problems of his own when he incurs the wrath of French Brigadier General Loup after executing two of his men for raping some village women. And as Sharpe's troop are sent on their mission, their problems are made a whole lot worse when propaganda comes about in American newspapers that the British have committed atrocities in Ireland, putting the whole battalion at risk and leaving Sharpe with very few people he can trust.
Starring Sean Bean, Daragh O'Malley, John Tams, Jason Salkey, Lyndon Davies, Hugh Fraser, Jason Durr, Allie Byrne, Siri Neal, Ian McNeice, Hugh Ross, Oliver Cotton, Liam Carney, Phelim Drew, Diana Perez, Robert Hands and Maria Petrucci. This was the 2nd adventure of the 3rd series, first broadcast on April 19th 1995, and sees a number of familiar faces, including Jason Durr (Heartbeat) and former child actress Siri Neal (Moondial). It also reunites Hugh Fraser (Captain Hastings himself) with a number of former Poirot co stars in Allie Byrne (Mysterious Affair at Styles) and Oliver Cotton (The Affair of the Western Star), plus regular Hugh Ross (Yellow Iris). It's surprising that Wellington doesn't recognize any of them! It's a pretty good episode too, but one where it sees a surprise and sad departure for one of Sharpe's chosen men. Please note this contains swearing, violence and brief nudity.
