Part 1 of 3 of the period drama. When prominent politician Lord Slane dies, his widow is left bereft. Having been a devoted and committed wife throughout his career, her children plot on how to manage her life now that her husband is dead But Lady Slade has a surprise for them all. Starring Wendy Hiller, Graham Crowden, Phyllis Calvert, John Franklin-Robbins, Hilary Mason, Geoffrey Bayldon, Faith Brook, Harry Andrews, Maurice Denham, Antonia Pemberton, Eileen Way, Jane Snowden, John Saunders, Katherine Stark and John Bott. This is a recording of mine I did recently when this was broadcast on BBC4 recently just by chance and I'm so glad I did. It was originally broadcast on TV on December 9th 1986 and was adapted from the 1931 novel by Vita Sackville-West. It has a great cast of names, and although you may find it hard to believe that Wendy Hiller could be old enough to be mother to any of her children (all of whom look as old as her - Phyllis Calvert was only 3 years younger than Hiller, ironically!), Hiller gives a lovely performance as Lady Slane, who finds herself with time on her hands after years of sacrificing her ambitions for that of her husband and children. I'd never seen this before, but it's a lovely drama serial and I think you will like it too. Enjoy.
