NOTE: In the slideshow are the paintings, magazine covers and masks by Władysław Teodor BENDA (born 1873 in Poznań, Poland died 1948 in Newark, New Jersey) Polish painter, illustrator and designer. Benda studied painting at the Academy of Beautiful Arts in Cracow, and in 1899 he trevelled to USA, following his aunt, who was a world famous Polish stage actress Helena Modrzejewska (aka Modjeska). She opened to the young artists the avenues to best American stages and magazines. He designed covers for dozens of issues of Life, Vanity Fair, Hearst's International, Cosmopolitan, Liberty, Redbook, Colliers, McCall's, Ladies Home Journal, Good Housekeeping, Theatre Magazine, The Shrine Magazine, The Saturday Evening Post or Vogue. Also very famous were his papier-mâché masks, he designed for New York revues and theatre performances (e.g. for the Ziegfeld Theatre).
