Song: Time Album: Aladdin Sane (1973) Artist: David Bowie
Time - He's waiting in the wings
He speaks of senseless things
His script is you and me, boy
Time - He flexes like a whore
Falls wanking to the floor
His trick is you and me, boy
Time - In Quaaludes and red wine
Demanding Billy Dolls
And other friends of mine
Take your time
The sniper in the brain, regurgitating drain
Incestuous and vain, and many other last names
I look at my watch it say
9:25 and I think "Oh God I'm still
alive"
We should be on by now
We should be on by now
Lai, lai, lai, lai, lai, lai, lai, lai
Lai, lai, lai, lai, lai, lai, lai, lai
You - are not a victim
You - just scream with boredom
You - are not evicting time
Chimes - Goddamn, you're looking old
You'll freeze and catch a cold
'Cause you've left your coat behind
Take your time
Breaking up is hard, but keeping dark is hateful
I had so many dreams, I had so many breakthroughs
But you, my love, were kind, but love has left you dreamless
The door to dreams was closed, your park was real and
greenless
Perhaps you're smiling now, smiling through this darkness
But all I have to give is guilt for dreaming
We should be on by now
We should be on by now
We should be on by now
We should be on by now
We should be on by now
Lai, lai, lai, lai, lai, lai, lai, lai
Lai, lai, lai, lai, lai, lai, lai, lai, lai
Lai, lai, lai, lai, lai, lai, lai, lai
Lai, lai, lai, lai, lai, lai, lai, lai, lai
Lai, lai, lai, lai, lai, lai, lai, lai
Lai, lai, lai, lai, lai, lai, lai, lai, lai
Lai, lai, lai, lai, lai, lai, lai, lai
Lai, lai, lai, lai, lai, lai, lai, lai, lai
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la
Yes time
David Bowie released his sixth album, Aladdin Sane, in the spring of 1973. "Time" was the lead-off track on the 2nd side. The album grabbed the
#1 spot in the UK, but just managed to break into the Top 20 in the U.S.
Even though I was already listening to quite a bit of album rock by the early-mid 70's, I hadn't become aware of Bowie yet when this album was released, I guess because the primary source of my early rock knowledge (and where I first learned of solo Beatles, Elton John, Jethro Tull, Cat Stevens, and other rock/singer songwriters), that is my older cousins, didn't have any Bowie records. I believe the first Bowie record I bought was when I was fifteen, in 1976, either the greatest hits compilation Changesonebowie, or Station To Station....either way one quickly led to the other!
Anyway, once I heard the records I was an instant huge fan (do remember hearing "Space Oddity" one the hits record and thinking, "That's, that song that I used to hear on the A.M. radio that always sounded like it was being transmitted from another planet!") and began buying the back catalog. Each and every one of the earlier records was a new favorite, but I remember finding those tracks on each album that just seemed to, and still do, sound like the greatest music I could imagine. "Time" was that song on Aladdin Sane. "Time" has always been one of my very favorite David Bowie tracks. I think the vocals are beyond incredible and the song melody, lyrics...not to mention the musicianship and production....are absolutely in the top handful greatest Bowie songs ever.
I have numerous Bowie songs that I hope to make vids for (and several in various stages of completion), and of course "Time" was among them, but I hadn't got started on anything for this one yet, then overnight the concept for the video hit me...basically Dali paintings, assorted clocks/masks, and the roiling clouds indicating time.
