The Sun Temple at Konark is one of the most fascinating and mysterious structures of India. It is loaded with astronomical sculptures like Sundials, wildlife sculptures depicting animal behavior and amorous sculptures that show human desires as well. Historians believe that it was built by king Narasimhadeva I around 1250 A.D, although it could have been built at a much older time. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the temple's original tower has been destroyed. The main temple has been sealed off, which contains some amazing sculptures. The temple was called "Black Pagoda" by European sailors who used it as a landmark.
