As the murder investigations continue, Dalgliesh discovers from Fallon's former boyfriend that she once had an affair with surgeon Stephen Courtney-Briggs and confronts him about it. He also learns that Fallon was poisoned by pesticide made by Leonard Morris, Sister Mavis Gearing's lover, which has now disappeared from the cupboard in the greenhouse. Christine Dakers confesses that she saw Madeline Goodall coming out of Fallon's room the night she died, and in further interrogation Goodall reveals new evidence about Pearce, who asked the morning of her murder if someone had taken anything from her room. But it's a throwaway remark by the cleaner Morag that leads to Dalgliesh seeking out Martin Dettinger's widow...
