Volvo Cars has officially unveiled its much anticipated 2nd generation XC90 in full at the 2014 Paris Motor Show. The new model is here to mark an all new journey for future Volvo's as they feature its striking new looks as well as a wide array if new technologies.
On the exterior, the new XC90 features daytime running lights and a vertical-slat grille with its distinctive diagonal slash across it. This makes the firm's latest flagship luxury SUV look pretty, stunning and more excitement than the previous Volvo's. The new model wears a newly designed 22-inch rims to complement its muscular lines.
This is the first Volvo production model to adopt the firm's new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). This platform will underpin the future Volvo passenger cars, of which a whole new range is expected by 2017.
In terms of safety, the new XC90 comes with wide variety of safety features and it also includes the world's first technologies such as a run-off road protection package and n auto brake at intersection capability. This move allows the company to have a step closer to achieve zero fatalities or serious injuries in a Volvo by year 2020.
According to Lex Kerssemakers, Senior Vice President, Product Strategy and Vehicle Line Management of Volvo Car Group, he says that 'Autonomous driving and online connectivity are two other parts of this vision'. He also explains that “With the XC90, we take the first step towards self-driving cars. A new function that automatically follows the vehicle ahead in stop-and-go traffic will provide a radically simplified, semi-autonomous driving experience.”
The interior design and technologies of the XC90 has been shown to potential customers earlier this year which also includes the cheeky spot in the unveiling of the Volvo Concept Estate. The new model features an all new tablet-like touch-screen control console which allows drivers to tap apps on the touchscreen while at the same time concentrating on the road. It is nearly button free, explains Volvo Cars and the company mentions that the latest Sensus interface “represents an entirely new way for drivers to control their car and access a range of Internet-based products and services.”
Other goodies include a heft of soft leather, and wood with handcrafted details, including a gear lever made of crystal glass from Orrefors, a famous Swedish glassmaker, with diamond-cut controls for the start/stop button and volume control.
In terms of drivetrains, the new 2015 XC90 will be powered by several Drive-E engines which is also available in the latest S60, V60 and XC60. Typically, a host of 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engines with different states of tune will be offered.
The range topper will utilise an internal combustion engine as well as an electric motor which Volvo calls it "Twin Engine". The petrol engine will benefit a turbocharger and a supercharger which brings the grand total of 400 hp and 640 Nm of torque, while keeping CO2 emissions of around 60g/km. Sounds amazing, right?
Other variants available include a T6 variant featuring a turbocharger and a supercharger sans the electric motor, making 330 hp and 400 Nm of torque. The diesel mills included in the range are the D5 and D4 variants, offering combinations of 225hp/470Nm and 190hp/400Nm respectively.
Volvo also offers the First Edition series which is strictly limited to 1,927 units. The number represents when the carmaker was first founded. The special edition models is available exclusively in the T6 AWD and the D5 twin-turbo diesel engine and all 1,927 units will feature an Onyx Black exterior with eight-spoke 21-inch wheel designs, nappa leather interior with the seats in Amber, a Charcoal leather dashboard and Linear Walnut inlays.
