𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙢𝙖𝙣 𝙐𝙎 𝘼𝙧𝙢𝙮 𝙎𝙩𝙜. 𝘽𝙞𝙡𝙠𝙤 𝙇𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙨 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝘼𝙧𝙢𝙮'𝙨 𝙍𝙚𝙘𝙧𝙪𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝘿𝙧𝙞𝙫𝙚~! I included this movie because it is - - - Funny! Steve Martin was perfect as the conman Stg. and the last big time movie that Phil Hartman was in before he was murdered by his wife while he was a sleep in their bed. There are a half dozen or so of really great movies on joining the US military and boot camp. Sgt. Bilko 1996 along with Stripes & Biloxi Blues to me are in the top 5 funny military boot camp type movies. It has been over 40 years since I went through boot camp & I still remember a lot of the guys during that time & some of the funny things that actually happened. Like in these movies not everything that happened was serious or even military, it was just so far out of the ordinary crap that you deal with that it likely was funny.
Besides the few main big name stars of this movie, most I never had heard of & I never actually watched in another movie since it came out 27 years ago. But, these no-name actors made a really great funny movie. So for that shinning moment in their lives they all did something positive that likely made millions of people over time - laugh~! That is the point of this kind of movie. To entertain you & make you laugh.
Sgt. Bilko is a well-liked conman in charge of the army base's motor pool, developing a hover tank and unofficially of gambling etc. One man hates Bilko and he's coming to inspect the base for possible closure. Phil Hartman stars as Maj. Colin Thorn. He has had run-ins with Stg. Bilko (Steve Martin) in the past and would love to hang Bilko out to dry in the desert sun. Dan Aykroyd as Col. John T. Hall Stg Bilko's base commander is great as a CO that does not know what really is going on or doesn't really want to know what is going on under his command.
There was a TV series back I believe in the 1950's titled Sgt. Bilko and it was a major hit for a number of years. The movie is a great addition 30+ years later to the TV series.
Stars: Steve Martin, Dan Aykroyd, Phil Hartman and many other fine actors.
Movie trivia.
01: The big gold stripes on Bilko's black dress uniform (worn during the wedding day scenes) are services stripes. Each one equals 3 years of service, he has 9 on each arm, so this indicates he's been in the U.S. Army for at least 27 years.
02: After Michael Keaton turned down the lead role of Sergeant Bilko, Robin Williams and Billy Crystal both expressed interest in playing it. Albert Brooks also turned down the part of Bilko. Eventually the role was cast with actor-comedian Steve Martin.
03: The actors who played soldiers had real boot camp training by Captain Dale Dye.
