One of the top San Francisco bands of all time, this was their only hit. The music composed by Gary Duncan, the lyrics were written by Jesse Oris Farrow (aka Chet Powers) who performed with the band under the name Dino Valenti. As Chet Powers he had written the immortal rock classic, "Get Together," which was recorded by The Youngbloods in 1969. The character and style of the group changed with Valenti's added vocals and musical compositions and often the band then went simply by the name Quicksilver. "Fresh Air" was literally everywhere on radio in 1970, both AM and FM, but (of course) especially FM. It was easily one of the top FM hits of the year and a personal favorite of mine. After hearing "Gone Again" (also written by Jesse Farrow), I had heard enough to go right out and buy the album, Just For Love. In most ways this was Quicksilver at its peak, although pre-Dino Valenti, that might be better said of Happy Trails (1969) ... an album which I turned the entire second side into a video (viewable here on Vimeo). Despite being one of the best rock songs of 1970, "Fresh Air" peaked on November 7, 1970 at only #49 on the Billboard Hot 100 (#71 on Cash Box) ... one of the many bewildering and unfair chart stories of the era. This video is a synchronization of a live Quicksilver concert in 1971, its location unknown. Some earlier psychedelic Quicksilver footage is included in the latter part.
