Here is a rare treat from the late great American mezzo Nan Merriman (born April 28, 1920, died July 22, 2012). On April 27 and 28, 1965 she gave two farewell concerts back to back -- one with piano and one with orchestra. Here is a rarely heard piece titled "Bid Adieu" with words and air by James Joyce and music arranged by Edmund Pendleton. The pianist is Felix de Nobel.
What a gifted singer and artist Ms. Merriman was!
"Bid Adieu" (from Chamber Music by James Joyce)
Bid adieu, adieu, adieu,
Bid adieu to girlish days,
Happy Love is come to woo
Thee and woo thy girlish ways —
The zone that doth become thee fair,
The snood upon thy yellow hair.
When thou hast heard his name upon
The bugles of the cherubim
Begin thou softly to unzone
Thy girlish bosom unto him
And softly to undo the snood
That is the sign of maidenhood.
