A biographical account of the band Savatage, containing the band's music, videos, interviews and live footage that takes you through the band's history. Savatage was formed in 1978 by Jon & Criss Oliva, joined by Steve Wacholz. The band released two albums independently on Par Records and then signed to Atlantic to release their third album, "Power of the Night." Despite solid material, the album didn't fare well commercially and due to management problems, the band's fourth effort, "Fight for the Rock" also became a failure. Savatage finally found success with their fifth album "Hall of the Mountain King" and continued this wave of success, peaking in 1989 with "Gutter Ballet" and continuing into 1991 with "Streets: A Rock Opera." In 1992, Jon Oliva stepped down as singer of the band, and was replaced by Zak Stevens. Savatage released "Edge of Thorns" in 1993, also having a fair amount of commercial success. Tragedy strikes in 1993, when Criss Oliva is killed in a car accident by a drunk driver. Jon then steps in to take over the band, releasing "Handful of Rain" in 1994 and "Dead Winter Dead" in 1995. These albums were a larger step by the band into the world of Progressive Rock, marking a turn in the direction oif the band. Jon Oliva's side project, Doctor Butcher, Released their first and only album in 1994. Savatage formed the Trans-Soiberian Orchestra as a side-project inspired by the sound of their most recent album and it became a massive commercial hit, far out-selling Savatage. Despite, the two groups so-existed for some time, Savatage releasing "The Wake of Magellan" in 1997 and "Poets and Madmen" in 2001. TSO also released several albums in the late 90s-early 2000s. In 2001, Stevens left Savatage to form Circle II Circle. Savatage then went on hiatus in late 2003. Jon Oliva also formed his own band, Jon Oliva's Pain and Chris Caffery became a solo artist, all while TSO remained active. Stevens and Plate also form Machines of Grace in 2009. Today, CIIC, JOP, TSO and MOG remain active, but there is little change of a Savatage Reunion.
