Here's a quick recap of the FAQ:
1. Where do I find a job? Google, google, google, google, and google some more! It's a great resource. As for websites that I found really helpful, check these out: www.eslcafe.comwww.ohayosensei.comwww.gaijinpot.com
2. Do I need a degree in education? No!!! Not at all! What you do need is a college degree, so a B.A. or a B.S. in anything
3. Do I need to speak Japanese? No, not at all. I'd highly recommend at least basic Japanese, but it's definitely not a job requirement.
4. Do I need to be from an English-speaking country? No, as long as you have been through 12 years of schooling in PRIMARILY English.
5. Can I come to Japan without a visa and get a job? It is very illegal to work in Japan on a tourist visa and immigration will get suspicious if you are going back and forth out of the country to renew a tourist visa and you could potentially get permanently deported. It's definitely a risk, but some people have done it successfully. I wouldn't recommend it, though! Also, without a proper visa, not only can you not work but you also can't open a bank account, rent an apartment, get a cell phone, and many other conveniences.
6. Where will I be working? The two main types of jobs here are ALTs and eikaiwas. As an ALT, you'd work in a Japanese public school. At an eikaiwa, you'd be working at an English cram school with students ranging from infants to adults.
7. What if I only want to work in a big city like Tokyo, Osaka, or Kobe? Good luck finding one from your home country! It's possible, but much easier to come here and work in the countryside for a year while looking for a job in the city you want to live in
8. What if I have no teaching or childcare experience? Having those experiences look great to potential employers and can better prepare you for the classroom. However, they aren't always job requirements, especially for teaching adults.
9. Is the salary enough to live on? As a single person? Most certainly yes!! I'm making probably about $30,000 a year!! I'd be making less dollars if the economy were better, though!
10. Do you have any advice for me? Be FLEXIBLE in everything you do here in Japan
