It was the 72nd edition of the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and was the fourth event of the 2017 UCI World Tour. It was the first time that the race was included in the UCI World Tour calendar. Greg Van Avermaet (BMC Racing) successfully defended his Omloop Het Nieuwsblad crown with a powerful sprint that saw off world champion Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Sep Vanmarcke (Cannondale Drapac). The trio moved clear of the remnants of the front group after the Paddestraat and despite a chase mounted by Quick-Step Floors and Team Sky, were able to hang on until the line. Vanmarcke, another former winner of the race, opened the sprint with around 150 meters to go but Van Avermaet was quick to respond. Peter Sagan appeared to closing in on the BMC Racing rider but he was forced to sit up with the line in sight, as the Olympic road race champion celebrated victory. Fabio Felline (Trek Segafredo) finished fourth, while there was no celebration for Tom Boonen in his final attempt at the race. The Belgian was caught behind a crash and never saw the front of the race despite a long chase. He abandoned inside the final 50 kilometres but is expected to start Sunday's Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne.
