In the 1980s and early 90s the English broadcaster, ROGER GEORGE CLARK, visited Leningrad/St Petersburg many times. He took more than 12,000 photos and recorded the fall of Communism. This is the third selection from his negatives.
'We start with soldiers and sailors who were so much part of the old Leningrad scene. Then a British-made Austin armoured car ... On 16 April 1917, on his return from exile in Switzerland, Lenin supposedly made an impromptu speech from its roof outside the Finland Station. For years the car was mounted on a plinth outside the Marble Palace which, in Communist times, was used as a Lenin Museum.
'Next we go inside the Peter and Paul fortress - including a view from inside the tower of the cathedral - like a scene from Alfred Hitchcock's film "Vertigo" - only much larger! In May, the Russians celebrate the official birthday of St. Petersburg in style. Conscripts dressed as period soldiers parade in the fortress as well as cadets and troops in modern uniforms. We also see the naval men who fire the midday gun that booms out over the city and a prison cell.
'In Palace Square people enjoy themselves - skating, strumming guitars, tossing Frisbees, busking, and cycling on strange tricycles and bicycles.
'We also go inside the university. This boasts one of the longest corridors I've ever seen. The university has a reputation for educating the majority of a Russia's current political elite; including presidents Vladimir Putin and Dimitry Medvedev, both of whom studied Law here. Even in Communist times the students looked much like their Western counterparts - casually dressed and relaxed. We see them in lectures and tutorials. An army band turned up when former students - veterans from WWII - the Great Patriotic War - attended a special presentation in the university. Outside in the dusty gardens students relax in the sunshine.
'What, I wonder, are the students I photographed doing now? Are they flourishing, or struggling, in the new Russia?
'Finally we visit the Yusupov Palace - where Rasputin was murdered. Something less sinister was happening when I arrived - a film company were making the movie "Young Catherine about the early years of Catherine the Great. The director, Michael Anderson, shot the film entirely on location in the city. The movie stars Vanessa Redgrave, Christopher Plummer, Franco Nero and Julia Ormond. Filming was going on in a carriage outside in the courtyard. What's a member of the film crew doing with a branch from a tree? To give the illusion the carriage was moving he cast shadows on the window with a branch.
'Here on YouTube you can find more photos I took in Soviet Moscow and Leningrad/St Petersburg in the 1980s and early 1990s by typing my name - ROGER GEORGE CLARK - into the search box. Also photos of the Kronstadt naval base - home of the Baltic Fleet. And you can find more details on my website.'
