The 2022 Renault Megane E-Tech Electric has been previewed, ahead of its European market launch in the first half of 2022.
Despite sharing its Megane name with today’s Renault small hatchback, sedan and wagon family, the new Megane E-Tech Electric will take the shape of a high-riding small SUV, powered solely by electricity – designed to be sold alongside its low-riding combustion relatives (albeit in name only).
An exterior image released by the French brand confirms the production-bound crossover will draw styling inspiration from the Megane eVision concept of 2020, with a full-width LED tail-light bar featuring Renault’s new corporate logo in the centre.
The concept’s lifted-hatch proportions appear to be retained, though the lack of front- or side-on images means it remains to be seen how much of the remainder of the show car's design will carry over to mass production.
Inside, front occupants will be presented with a pair of large screens integrated into one freestanding unit, with a digital instrument cluster in front of the driver, and a portrait, Tesla-style infotainment touchscreen between the passengers.
The freestanding screen design allows for expansive storage in the centre console, while the images show the infotainment system will offer a number of customisable profiles for different drivers.
Underpinning the Megane E-Tech Electric will be the brand’s CMF-EV electric platform, shared with alliance partner Nissan’s Ariya mid-size SUV.
The concept paired a 160kW/300Nm electric motor on the front axle with a 60kWh lithium-ion battery for a confirmed sub-eight-second 0-100km/h sprint, and a likely driving range exceeding to the 360km WLTP quoted by the heavier Ariya with the same powertrain.
The 2022 Renault Megane E-Tech Electric should be unveiled later this year, ahead of a European market launch in the first half of 2022, according to Renault CEO Luca de Meo.
It’ll be one of seven new electric vehicles wearing Renault badges to launch between now and 2025, including a production version of the 5 Prototype concept.
Fans of the current Megane need not fear, as the petrol-powered hatch, sedan and wagon are slated to continue to be sold globally, alongside the new electric SUV.
