GHOST AND MRS MUIR .BY MANKIEWICZ . REX HARRISON ,GENE TIERNEY ,MUSIC -BERNARD HERMANN ---seldom have i seen a movie so accomplished on all perspectives , if i had to call any movie a masterpiece its this ,every scene is perfectly realised , casting is perfect to the tee , Gene the young English widow looking for a a life for her own , a sea faring English captain who died accidentally but is haunting his seaside cottage ,he forgot to make a will how to dispose his gorgeous cottage which sits on a craggy beach ,where waves crash into surf and create cinema magic with a most sonorous soundtrack and the wind that whistles and blows through the cottage in whirling pools of magical sound ,this is a aesthetic technical and moral masterclass ,its a director's delight who has two great actors , greater dialogues and he is having a ball .i as audience am lucky to relish this absolute delight ,the haunting for me is purest most romantic cine event i seen recently ,rex Harrison is the most charismatic male ghost ever m his voice his body language and manner exceed any English actor ever , his stern exterior . his impertinent manner of speech are charm enough to make any woman go out of her head ,gene Tierney is in love with his cottage already ,the director has the most ingenious ideas as to make him appear to the lady the doors windows and rooms all come alive in technical glory as shadows , lights and creaks and footsteps mingle with the voices of the blasted ghost and the delicate tiny widow and rex and gene are magical in every scene , he tells her i am real as long as you believe i am ,he makes comments on how becoming her seven freckles her , she tells him he must have been a horrid little boy, he guffaws , it a quibbled quarrelsome ,intimate romance and its earthy as the very truth that inhabits this planet ,she runs into financial difficulties and he offers to help her by writing a book of his sea adventures ,a gutsy real genuine account of sea faring sailors and their trials and test ,to make public realise what a hard job sailing is and no romantic adventure ,her name Lucy he changes to Lucia fit for an amazon queen ,she is head over heels in love with a ghost , he sends her out to meet publishers and she meets other men .he wants her to meet living men ,the outing ends in a farewell for the two and the ghost casts a spell as if the whole event was a dream only , maybe it was and so is our whole life , this is an extremely intelligent philosophical idea even for golden age movies , it borders onto genius m it is something i wont mind writing , a gentlemen says , the most celebrated poems about England in spring were written by poets living in Italy ,the movie expresses many great awkward but wise truths amongst its most haunting heartfelt romance , the movie touches every aspect anout a man woman relationship that is relevant in this ghostly affair where the lead lovers never can even touch ,naybe that is why its so cerebrally superior to the rest of erotic romances Hollywood manufactures ,rex Harrison has the most fascinating chemistry with Tierney, physical and intellectual , and its the intellectual bit that completely floored me ,even the end and climax is the most unpredictable and soulful for such a great intellectual literary drama ,🎭 ,Markiewicz has exploited the most intellectual script , he says a woman can only be kissed by a man when deep down she desires to be kissed ,she retorts that is pure masculine conceit ,they argue about advantages and conveniences of being alive or dead , Lucy craves for a real man, love and companionship but she discovers it does not exist ,maybe we all discover that fact in our lives sooner or latter ,but Mankiewicz has MOULDED something very curious quaint and complete ,the ghost talks to her as she sleep she tells her you chose the living as you must and meet fair winds or foul find your own way to harbour, she does all that and yet she finally finds all she wants in death , what a wondrous and totally sophisticated intelligent drama that could bring a ghost to life by its sheer creativity .rex Harrison laments she will never see the reefs of Barbados where blue water turns green or the gale off Falklan🥰ds whitens the whole horizon , he is obviously unaware nature is more merciful than man , he finds his redemption so does Mrs Muir in a drama swathed in intellect beyond comprehension
